2010 Honorary Games Chair |
Rod J. Chisholm
The Antigonish Highland Society has
named one of its most esteemed life members, Rod
J. Chisholm, Q.C., as Honorary Chair of the
147th Antigonish Highland Games.
Twice president of the Highland Society, Rod
Chisholm has long played a role in preserving
the heritage of the Highland Scots in Nova
Scotia. It would be impossible to list all of
the contributions Rod has made in this regard,
but two very visible reminders stand in Cairn
Park at the west end of Main Street, Antigonish.
Rod was instrumental in having the first cairn,
dedicated to the Clan Chisholm, built in 1983.
He was also key in having the Antigonish
Highland Society cairn erected there in 1997 and
in negotiating with the Sisters of St. Martha so
that the Celtic Cross that stood at the old
hospital could be included in the cairn’s
architecture.
Rod is a founding member of the Clan Chisholm
Society and three times was elected president of
that very active Society. He is also a founding
member of the Federation of Scottish Clans of
Nova Scotia and served as president of the
federation for four years beginning in 1983. For
more than a decade he was the driving force
behind the Culloden Commemoration in Knoydart,
Pictou County, Nova Scotia. This annual
celebration honours the memory of those who died
at the Battle of Culloden Moor, Scotland, on
April 16, 1764. The Federation’s avid and
continued support of this unique and
well-attended event can be traced to Rod’s
efforts.
Rod is indeed a true Scot and loves everything
about his involvement with the Scottish clans
and societies. In 2006, in recognition of his
tremendous contributions to the preservation of
our Scottish culture and heritage, the
Federation of Scottish Clans of Nova Scotia
declared Rod Chisholm Scot of the Year.
