The professionally made DVD (Seabright Productions) has two features: a half hour highlight reel of the 2011 Highland Games and a one-hour historical documentary.

The Highland Games feature includes clips of the Concert Under the Stars, Natalie MacMaster's show, Gaelic singing, the Heavy event competitions in the rain, interviews with Canadian Heavy Events champ Greg Hadley and others, piping competitions, highland dancing, tug o war, the parade and the ceilidhs. It is a fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable snapshot of the 2011 Games.

The DVD also includes a one hour documentary that traces the journey of the Highland Caravan on Aug. 20th, 2011. The Caravan presents the history of Highland Scottish immigration to Antigonish, including scholarly presentations on what life was like in 16th-18th century Scotland, the Battle of Cullodwn, the Highland Clearances, the immigrant ships, the settlement of Arisaig and other coastal communities, inland settlement (Antigonish, St. Andrew's, the Keppoch, Loch Katrine...) and the Highland women of Nova Scotia. The documentary also includes musical performances by Hector MacIsaac, Catriona Parsons, Brian MacDonald, Ian Juurlink and even a milling frolic. Interspersed with the history and music are beautiful scenic shots of Antigonish county and historical photographs of life in Old and New Scotland.

The DVD will make a great Christmas gift for yourself or anyone interested in local culture and history.

It sells for $20 in stores (5¢ to A Dollar, Nova Scotia Store, Lyghtesome Gallery), or by calling Danny Gillis at 902-735-2453.

 2012 Schedule of Events

Nova Scotia Gaelic Bards Commemoration / Latha Cuimhneachadh nam Bard
Friday March 30, 2012
7:00pm - 9:00pm
Hall of the Clans, Angus L. Macdonald Library
St Francis Xavier University

Some of the most celebrated Scottish Gaelic poetry of the nineteenth century was composed not in Scotland but in Nova Scotia. The Antigonish Highland Society and St Francis Xavier University are working together to commemorate the Gaelic poets of Nova Scotia to ensure that their lives and accomplishments are remembered and appreciated in our community.

This year we are proud to celebrate the work of Alasdair Ailein Mhóir, Bard na Ceapaich (Alexander MacDonald, the Keppoch Bard). He was born in Moidart, Scotland, in 1820 but migrated to the Keppoch (in Antigonish County) in 1830 and became one of the outstanding poets of his generation. Trueman and Laurinda Matheson, who have written a definitive edition of his song-poetry, will discuss his legacy and a selection of his songs will be sung. Coffee, tea and a light snack will be provided.

Free and open to the public. Anyone with an interest in Scottish heritage is encouraged to attend.

ROBBIE BURNS NIGHT

SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 2012
7:00 – 10:00 pm
JOHN PAUL CENTRE,
MAIN STREET, ANTIGONISH (next door to the Opportunity Shop)

We invite one and all to the Highland Society's Burns Night this year to celebrate Robbie Burns, the bard of Scotland. The evening will be filled with Scottish entertainment including the music of the pipes; the Scotia Highland Dancers; Ed Carty's stirring recitation of Burns; and the Ode to the Haggis with everyone savoring the taste of "haggis and neeps". Later in the evening, Brian MacDonald and friends will play a few lively fiddle tunes that will have us on our feet, or at least tapping them. There will also be a cash bar. Other entertainment may be scheduled. This is an important event for the Highland Society when we hope to reconnect with our friends and possibly gain a few new members! Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you on the 28th! Please bring a friend or two!

What role can tartan, kilts, and the spectacles of Highland Games play in this? Do they actually increase the understanding and awareness of authentic Highland culture or propagate misrepresentations? Do they enrich local communities in any substantial and sustaining way?" The panelists are Lewis MacKinnon (Office of Gaelic Affairs, Nova Scotia), Michael Newton (Dept of Celtic Studies, StFX University), Alexa Thompson (Celtic Life Magazine), Tom Wallace (President of the Federation for Scottish Culture in Nova Scotia).
